To apply:

  • Participants must be ABA members and have good knowledge of the Italian language. Seminars will be conducted in Italian

  • Open to scholars and graduate students; applicants should be affiliated with a North American university

  • In addition to a CV and brief statement of interest, graduate students should provide a brief description of their research project in the field of Boccaccio studies (title, abstract, description of the project, contribution to the field, and selected bibliography).

  • Qualified applicants should send their CV and 250 word statement of interest to Paola Ureni (paola.ureni@csi.cuny.edu)

The program fee for the seminar is $800 (USD) to be paid to the American Boccaccio Association upon notification of acceptance. Participants will receive notice of their acceptance on a rolling basis as applications are received. 

The American Boccaccio Association will provide two travel grants of $250 each to graduate students.

The American Boccaccio Association, in collaboration with the Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio, is proud to offer the 2024 The Paleography Seminar. The ABA Paleography Seminar is a series of intensive lessons taught in the major historical libraries of Florence and Rome by top paleographers in the field of Boccaccio Studies. The seminar includes methodological and practical components of Latin and vernacular paleography. The teaching program will include: propaedeutic online sessions in May; eight days in Italy (Florence, Certaldo, and Rome) in June, with regular classes in the morning and supervised study sessions in the afternoon; introductions to the major Florentine and Roman libraries; paleography activities on Latin and vernacular manuscripts, and transcription practice.
